Day 11 of Michigan trip

Today was a touring day.  We went to a park on Lake Superior - Presque Isle Park in Marquette near the Upper Harbor Ore Dock pictured here - very near downtown Marquette.  Ships (ore boats) come in along side this dock every day.  Trains carrying the ore go on top of the dock and the ore is dumped into the 200 "pockets" on the top deck of the dock. Each pocket has a chute at the bottom that opens letting the pellets flow into the boat.  Loading time takes about 4 hours.  Each year about 10 million TONS of ore are shipped from this dock to steel mills in the great lakes region.  It would have been great to see a boat being filled when we were there this morning!

This picture on a nice Lake Superior beach shows the other side of the ore dock.

We had to try a pasty (pron."pass-tee").  A staple in the lunchboxes of the miners is still enjoyed in the UP.  This hot handheld meat pie was filled with beef, potato, rutabaga, and onion.  It originated in the Cornish region in England.  Lots of  miners were recruited from there to work the mines in the UP.
We liked it pretty well but not enough to buy frozen ones to put in our freezer in the camper.

Our rv camper is situated just outside the chain link fence around this (slightly heated) pool. There's also a kiddie pool and thankfully a "not too hot" hot tub.  Also pictured below is a bouncy pad near the pool area that will get a lot of use!  Tomorrow Jake's family will be coming over for an afternoon of fun at the campground with Uncle Ben!  Joshua is very excited to see his uncle.  He even told someone at the park yesterday that his uncle is coming the day after tomorrow!

Tomorrow morning Vernon, Jake and Joshua are going fishing before we pick up Ben at the airport!
