Day 14 San Jose to Kingman, Arizona

Today was the first day on the way back east.  We left Ben and Katie's at 6:00 a.m. and got set up at camp in Kingman, AZ at 6:00 p.m. We are at a campground just off Route 66 about 1 1/4 hours south of  Hoover Dam.

So tomorrow we'll head up there and take the dam tour. :)  We'll be sure to hold on to the dam handrail so we don't fall down the dam steps!  (Thank you Jeff Z. for the dam advice that you texted to us today.)

Here are a few pictures of the (long) day of traveling.

A pretty lake as the sun is rising in the Diablo Mtns going back on the same road in the opposite direction as the trip up last week

An interesting mtn landscape and a silhouette of Vernon's nice face.  Please disregard the reflection of McDonald's drink cups.  (First fast food of the trip -- really!)

We think that's snow on the top of those mountains!  Something our friends and family in PA are seeing a lot of today I hear.

Edwards Airforce Base where they test new aircraft.   See the many wind turbines in the background. The base is 31 miles long.  There are 3 other military bases even bigger than this in this desert region of southern California.
We crossed over the Colorado River into Arizona and still more mountains.

Our campground is near the old Rt 66.  Not sure what Supai is.  (3/16:  I found out that Supai is a layer of sandstone that you see in the walls of the Grand Canyon)

Day 14:  592 miles from San Jose,California to Kingman, Arizona
Tomorrow:  Hoover Dam
