Day 11 San Francisco with Ben/Katie/Owen

Today we ventured up to San Francisco. We saw the Palace of Fine Arts -- a grouping of Greek/Roman style columns and architecture built for the Panama-Pacific Exposition in 1915. This was near Marina Blvd. where we dodged many joggers and bicyclers.

Then ping pong at the 'Inovation Hangar' near the 'Palace' structures

Then we saw the Golden Gate Bridge from Marina Avenue.

Then Alcatraz.

We ate at 'Dorian's' - a funky restaurant with a creative decor.  (The food was 'underwhelming' as Katie put it.)

It was cool to see the trolleys -- some motorized and some still powered by electric cables overhead.

We drove up one of the many hills in the city -- we're trying to figure out what angle grade it was -- probably 50 or 60 degrees.  Katie noticed that ahead of us was a small car with a standard shift. We were glad when it pulled away before we came up behind it near the top of the hill!

A good little traveler for the 1 1/2 hour trip

Alcatraz Prison -- 1 1/2 miles from the mainland

Only one successful prisoner escape from this island was in 1962 three bank robbers dug a tunnel with sharpened spoons and swam to the mainland.  The prison closed in 1963 due to high costs of operation.

It was windy and cool on the bay so this was the world's fastest diaper change.
Lunch at 'Dorian's'

Electric powered trolley

Double decker bus

Steps for a sidewalk because the street was so steep

Architecture of many homes in San Francisco was beautiful
