This post will be completed when we get home in a couple of days
The Lincoln Memorial Gardens and Nature Center -- this was a very special walk through trees beside Springfield Lake.
Lots of Basswood trees and Honey Locust (with thorns!) here. Vernon said Basswood is a good soft wood to carve with.
"Sleep"
Day 20
Today we toured 2 homes in Springfield, Illinois:
It was quite an experience touring Frank Lloyd Wright's Dana -Thomas house in downtown Springfield. It was one of his "prairie style" homes built for a wealthy widow and socialite who was a fan of Wright who was only 35 years old at the time. These pictures from a pictorial book that we bought at the gift shop are much better than the ones I took. We were only allowed to take pictures of the exterior of the house anyway.
Vernon loved studying the architectural details of the building materials - the long horizontal bricks - and the incredible woodwork inside the house.
Another entrance to the home. There are seven. A couple of the entrances are just for ice delivery for the ice boxes. No electricity yet when this was built but it did have the new technology of gas for lighting and heating. Notice the lilies in the reflecting pool.
The main entrance is on the right. The tall windows light the conservatory area inside where all kinds of orchids and other plants grew year round.
The "Flower in the Crannied Wall" statue in the entryway by sculptor Richard Bock. He created it to symbolize the relationship between architecture and nature. The poem is inscribed on the back of this statue which you can see on the next level of the youse
Flower in the Crannied Wall
by Alfred Lord Tennyson
Flower in the crannied wall,
I pluck you out of the crannies,
I hold you here, root and all, in my hand,
Little flower - but if I could understand
What you are, root and all, all in all,
I should know what God and man is.
